- Dear contributors,
Since the establishment of our Charity, we have been raising funds to send relief to the provinces like Shandong, Henan, Zhejiang, Shanxi. Fengtian, Shunzhi. It goes almost at the end of our resources to do this like draining the pond to get all the fish. In the past few years there was good weather, so that we thought we might stop for a rest. Unfortunately, there comes drought in Gaozhou and Guangxi, to name the area close to us; and in Hunan and Gansu, rather far area. We got news from officials and friends in Guangxi Province that it did not rain last autumn, resulting in a crop failure. The people in the stricken area had nothing to eat, tree barks and grass roots, eaten as substitution, ran out. The Districts like Liuzhou, Qingyuan, Nanning, Taiping were the most severely inflicted areas. We then received report from Xinagzhong Contribution Association that in Hunan Province there was no rain last autumn, and still drought in this spring. The people in this area have to flee from famine. The three Districts: Changsha, Baoqing, Hengzhou are the most severely inflicted areas. In Gansu the disaster of killing and burning continues since the Hongyang turmoil. The provincial officials had tried to relieve the people and reported to the Emperor for instruction. However famine is so severe and the stricken area is so wide, they feel it is beyond their ability to save so many people. We received many urgent imploration letters, and sent out several thousands of relief funds. It is now the time when the crop is still in the blade and the old stock is all consumed. If we do not offer help, thousands of people would die of famine. We know it is difficult this time with so many provinces inflicted, and so many previous contributions done in the past few years. We believe, anyway, that we have so big a territory, there must be of many people who are given to doing charitable work. We therefore appeal to all the people to express your benevolence and humanity to help those in deep distress. No matter how much you contribute, thousands of dollars or just half a dollar, you are doing a great benevolent act.
