with a band of key-fret. The column rising
from the centre of this tray has a small

This vase is similarly decorated to the pre-
ceding pricket candlestick and was prob-
ably part of the same Buddhist altar set.
An altar set consists of five objects: a pair
of flower vases, a pair of candlesticks and
an incense burner. The vases and the
pricket candlestick were acquired by Sir
James Howard Thornton while taking part
in the Franco-British expedition to Peking
in i860. The upper and lower rim of the
vase are decorated with a key-fret pattern.
The neck is decorated with a geometric
design and has cloisonne handles. The body
is covered with floral scrolls and red bats,
the symbol of vast happiness.
