Ming dynasty; early 16th century

The central medallion of the bowl has a
pair of Mandarin ducks, the emblem of
conjugal fidelity. This is encircled by six
ponies galloping over dark green waves.
The exterior of the bowl has a frieze of six
Buddhist lions playing with ribboned bro-
cade balls amidst cloud scrolls. The upper
rim is decorated with a zigzag border, while
the foot rim is bordered by lotus petals. The
colours include: red, yellow, white, cobalt
blue, black, brown, dark green, purple, and
mixed yellow-green and red-white, on a
turquoise-blue ground.
