Alkali Lake. June 5, 1952.
Spent the day examining the nests found yesterday
A dead fir stub on top of the hill 10 yds [yards] N [north] of the
fence line half way along the E [east] side of Sorenson Lake
contained a sparrowhawk sitting on 4 eggs.
The bufflehead nest on the first pond along
axe lake road contained 10 eggs + was occupied
by [female symbol] band # [space left blank]. She was marked
yellow on left [word crossed out] right wing.
The goldeneye nest on the w [west] side of
Colpitt Lake was reached by ladder + found to
contain 8 or 9 eggs of a size suggesting bufflehead
These were cold but had not been deserted for
more than a few days (2 or 3) as the 5 +/- day
embryos had not started to rot.
The nest half way down the E [east] side of
Colpitt Lake had 11 eggs in it, absolutely
fresh, 2 with small punctures in them,
well covered with down. Two bufflehead
drakes are on the lake but no hens seen.
The nest at Axe Lake contained an
uncounted # of eggs but had no bird
on it.
After supper ran down here + had a
long chat with Mr Ridemann + was persuaded
to stay the night. He believes that there are many
fewer moose than 40,000 in the Central Interior
+ estimates the annual kill as near 10 000. At
the same time he admits that he can crop his
cattle at only 25%
His pheasants did not decline during recent crash.
