  • (1) [circled] I. McT. [Ian McTaggart] Cowan 1935 Thetis Lake, VI [Vancouver Island], BC. [British Columbia] Sept [September] 8, 1935. Walked completely around Thetis Lake. Bright sunny day, no wind., no rain for several weeks. Lake in two parts with narrow channel connecting Western [word crossed out] Eastern half, about 1/2 mile long by 1/4 mile wide. Shores largely steep bluffs with very occasional marshy spots, these never more than a few 20-30 ft [feet] long. Shores timbered to waters edge with mixed growth of Douglas fir + arbutus, occasional Jack pine. Undergrowth salal on drier spots, bracken closer to the water. Western half about 1/2 mile x 1/4 to 1/8 mile; shores largely low, marshy, two bays with small patches of rushes + water lilies. About half acre of swampy meadow at extreme end. The vegetation around this part is largely deciduous. Close to the water, willow + Alnus sitchensis, further from river Alnus rubra + Cornus nuttali [underlined] [nuttallii]. Undergrowth largely bracken + salal, some brambles. In places Spirea discolor is abundant. On the eastern half bird life is scarce. A few robins + nuthatches, 2 juncos were all the birds seen.
