I. McT. [Ian McTaggart] Cowan 1935.
Esquimalt Lagoon to Wiers [Weir's] Beach, V.I. [Vancouver Island], BC. [British Columbia]
Oct. [October] 10, 1935
Bright sunshiny day, no wind.
While crossing the spit between
the Lagoon + the open harbour
we put up a shrike - ad [adult] [female symbol] as
afterwards discovered. This specimen
was collected. It flew from
bush top to bush top,
occassionally [occasionally] lighting on the
ground, but only once going
into the branches of a small
tree. Its whole preference
was for an exposed observation
post rather than for concealment.
A disused gravel pit 1/4
mile down the beach from the
W. [west] end of the Lagoon was of
interest. The W. [west] side of this
pit was covered with a dense
growth of broom - 8-10 ft [feet]
high in places. The floor +
E [east] side bore scattered clumps
of more stunted broom.
Some 250 +/- quail were in
this pit, for the most part
in the scattered broom on the
floor. As soon as the alarm
was spread they all took to
the thick broom, where they
scurried around clucking
in alarm. Many of them took
to the bigger bushes + hid in
