  • Victoria, B.C. [British Columbia] Oct. [October] 25, 1938. Disease Went with [Bruce] Cash to examine a spike buck shot yesterday + reported to be badly diseased. Found a small spike buck covered with tumorous growths. Some of these were discharging, particularly those on the head + neck. Some were peduncled others sessile. The head was a mass of these, as will be seen in the photograph others were on the sides, belly, chest, tail, fore + hind legs. On the lower legs they were smaller, not more than 1/4 inch in diameter in some cases. The deer had been unable to see out of one eye + had permitted approach to within 20 feet while it remained in its bed. When seen first it was in full jump. Heavy Litoptera infestation Census A fine hour hunt along Millstream road near Fork Lake produced 10 does + fawns, 3 bucks, one of which was a spike the other two better than that.
