  • Goldstream Lake, V.I. [Vancouver Island] April 2, 1940 Food. Stomach contents Douglas fir 85% Usnea 12% Cladonia, rock tripe, flat lichen + Sedum oregonum 3% Traces of cedar Found a manzanita bush slightly eaten also a species of Cardamine (see collection) eaten in small amounts. Viola sempervirens [underlined] in flower but rare + not noticed to have been eaten at all. In one place the Pipsissewa had been lightly browsed but this is about the only occassion [occasion] I have noticed deer eating it. Young Cedar are all heavily browsed. This may indicate a preference for cedar over fir or it may be only that cedar is less abundant + consequently causal utilization looms larger in respect to each tree.
