  • Cowichan Lake, B.C. [British Columbia] Dec. [December] 1, 1939. Raining in showers, wind from the N.E. [Northeast] but very light + fitful. Temperature at 8:30 A.M. 57%, 62 [degree symbol] at noon. Time spent 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Deer seen 1 large 3 pt. [point] buck. 1 doe *1 large 3 pt [point] buck 3 does, 1 spike b. [buck] 2 forks 2 does. 1 fork, 1 small d. [doe], 1 large d. [doe] 1 large b. [buck], 1 spike 2 forks 1 4 pt [point], 1 doe. 1 doe 1 doe. 4 large [male symbol]'s, 5 forks, 2 spike, 10 does. apparently no fawns. The large 3 pt [point] marked * was actively running one of the does + the 4 pt [point] was evidently running the doe he accompanied but for the most part the rut seemed over. Deer were comparatively tame + it was easy to approach within 75 yards of them without particular precaution. The light wind + moist air seemed to prevent scenting + most deer stopped soon after their visual alarm had induced flight.
