- Cowichan Lake. Jan [January] 31/40 [1940].
From noon until 3:30 all
deer were bedded but started
to feed if made to rise from
their beds by a suspicious
noise.
At 3:30 found the 2 large bucks
with antlers feeding slowly along
some bluffs keeping a careful
watch below, often standing
for 2 to 3 minutes at a time
looking out below them + all
the time moving up wind.
All deer today were bedded
on the sunny side of the
hill.
One buck saw me on all
fours. I froze, deer looks hard
for 3 minutes, stamps feet
+ snorts, repeats snorting
+ tossing head + looking this
way + that for 5 minutes
or so then moves out of sight.
Before this buck snorted the [underlined]
other on [one] feeding within a
few yards took no notice + did
not seem to recognize the
attentive attitude of the first.
When the first b. [buck] snorted the
second one froze + gazed
steadily down hill in my direction
without raising his head. When
