- Coldstream Lakes, V.I. [Vancouver Island] Dec. [December] 19, 1939.
Feeding. Deer were most of them scattered
widely over the second growth
area, perhaps a tendency to
congregate in the timber or near
areas of timber but at least
as many were seen away
from such.
Only one deer a buck was
known to have been bedded
down when jumped. This one
at 11:30 was found fast asleep
in the open on a rocky knoll.
We approached to within 20-25
feet of it without its waking.
A vagrant breeze finally
carried our scent to it +
instead of dashing off it
quietly sneaked away.
As late as 10:30 AM the deer
were still on the move back
from the lake.
Lots of usnea blow down
from the trees in the recent
storms. Noted feeding on salal, arbutus,
+ manzanita recently.
Stomach contents 55% Boletus mushroom
30% Usnea.
10% Douglas fir.
4% cedar
1% salal. [arrows indicate previous two lines switched]
A shed antler of last year
had been extensively chewed.
