- Cowichan Lake, April 26/40 [1940]
Behaviour:- The weather was
unruly, occassional [occasional] light
showers all morning, cold
wind. Mid-day temp. [temperature] 420.
Deer very wild early in
morning, but after steady
rain started at 11:30 or
so were much easier to
approach.
At 9. AM sighted a buck 50 yds [yards]
away slowly feeding up hill, he
seldom stopped feeding to look
about, was browsing exclusively
on spirea [underlined]. After 10 min. [minutes]
went out of sign in a hollow
+ I stalked to within 25 yds [yards]
keeping wind in my favor
+ making no noise. In about
2 min. [minutes] he noticed my head
showing above a log. Stared
hard 60 sec. [seconds] moved head +
stared 55 sec. [seconds], walked several
paces + stood absolutely still
staring in my direction, every
now + then altering position
of head. Went 5 yard out on
open knoll, + began alternately
snorting + staring. each
snort was accompanied by
a more vigorous movement
than its precursor, until
