  • Cowichan Lake. Mar [March] 23, 24. From noon on until 4. all deer seen were bedded. Weather + behaviour:- See weather record. The barometer was falling, temp [temperature] high on 23rd. wind blew strongly from the east all day, fine sunshine in morning but clouding up in early afternoon + hard rain started at 4 o'clock + lasted until about 6 AM on the 24th. The weather on the 23rd was oppressive + the deer very easy to approach. A yearling I saw on that date + stalked for an hour was very sedentary + not the least alert. It paused to look about only about once in 15 minutes. Fed slowly up wind from 11 AM until 12 noon + was still feeding when I left it. On the 24th the weather was bright becoming hot but not oppressive, some scattered clouds in the morning but mostly bright sunshine. Light west wind in mid afternoon. Deer unsuspicious, + feeding in sun on open hillsides. Bucks not in evidence - perhaps they were in the timber. (See over) Marginalia: Another deer seen feeding in open at 2:30 P.M.
