- Brentwood, V.I. [Vancouver Island], B.C. [British Columbia] Feb. [February] 13, 1940.
About noon a large dog ran
a small 8 mos [months] buck into
the water near Tod Inlet. I
proceeded to the place + found
the deer swimming feebly. It
took about 10 minutes to swim
150 yards - 200 yards. The swimming
it used both legs on the same
side at the same time, its
haunches were up out of the
water as was the entire neck,
The shoulders were submerged.
As it swam it gritted its
teeth every few seconds. On
reaching shore this deer was too
weak to climb out of the
water even though the beach
sloped gently.
It offered no resistance to
being picked up. I took it to
camp + warmed it in front
of the fire. For three hours
it quivered + gritted its teeth.
+ finally went into convulsions
+ died.
Upon examination this deer
had the dorsal lobes of both
right + left lung infested
with lung worm. The lung
tissue here was dark red,
nodual + hard to the touch.
