June 13/53 [1953]. Oxford.
Left Edinburgh last night + arrived here this morning
just after nine. Walked up to the university museums.
+ there met Professor A.C. [Sir Alister Clavering] Hardy + had a chat with
him on various matters + had morning coffee in
the quad with him.
I was most taken with his series of closed
circuit, refrigerator cooled (the water), aerated salt
water tanks. in which various smaller
invertebrates were on view.
I saw around the research quarters but
did not see anything very exciting going on.
One man was studying the genetics of Papilio,
a girl was working on the influence of disease
in mice upon fecundity but I did not get the details.
Lunched at Merton with [Sir Alister Clavering] Hardy + visited the
old Library, oldest in Britain, begun about
1345+/-. Many of the original books are still
there + chained to their shelves which are of
Jacobin period. After lunch went out to
Ron + Violet St John Yates where I am visiting.

Lunched with the Dennis Chitty's. He is following
up his Microtus [underlined] work with attempts to transplant
animals from stressed areas into unstressed
areas + to follow through the results. If things
