  • Research Stevens [underlined] (see later) June 13/53 [1953]. Oxford. Left Edinburgh last night + arrived here this morning just after nine. Walked up to the university museums. + there met Professor A.C. [Sir Alister Clavering] Hardy + had a chat with him on various matters + had morning coffee in the quad with him. I was most taken with his series of closed circuit, refrigerator cooled (the water), aerated salt water tanks. in which various smaller invertebrates were on view. I saw around the research quarters but did not see anything very exciting going on. One man was studying the genetics of Papilio, a girl was working on the influence of disease in mice upon fecundity but I did not get the details. Lunched at Merton with [Sir Alister Clavering] Hardy + visited the old Library, oldest in Britain, begun about 1345+/-. Many of the original books are still there + chained to their shelves which are of Jacobin period. After lunch went out to Ron + Violet St John Yates where I am visiting. June 14/53 [1953]. Oxford. Lunched with the Dennis Chitty's. He is following up his Microtus [underlined] work with attempts to transplant animals from stressed areas into unstressed areas + to follow through the results.
