Today drove to Carron Reservoir near Stirling to
examine an outbreak of microtus that is doing serious
damage in a forest here.
En route + in conversation I gather that there are
2 1/2 million acres of forest in Scotland, now an acre in 20
aim at 1 in 8. The foresters are convinced that sheep
alone on the hills is steadily bringing on deforestation
sheep + cattle are better + may be tolerable on the
long pull. Where forest growth increment runs
500+/- in ft [feet] per acre per annum forestry composes
favourably with sheep as a land use form
They have just started genetic selection of elite
trees after the Scandinavian manner + are attempting
to plant the seed of their diff [different] tree types in
the same soil types as the parent tree.
Species used are Douglas Fir, Pinus contorta,
Picea sitchensis, norway spruce, Pinus sylvestris,
Abies grandis (too brittle), Japanese larch or better
a hybrid jap [japanese] - European larch. Beech.
On these hills planting goes to 1500 ft [feet] on
sheltered sites. Sitka spruce gives greatest
increment of all on suitable sites. Used as a
pioneer. Their intention is in the
second rotation to diversify both in species
and age classes.
Planting + preparation of site were
interesting to me. Preparation consists of
