We left Eskadale [Eskdale] at 8 o'clock + drove to Beuly [Beauly]
then Bonar Bridge. Thence to Lairg + along Loch Shin where
the real character of this part of the highlands
shows. A small island in the Loch is treed but
all else is barren + overgrazed by sheep.
Near Loch More on the Duke of Westmintsters
estate a lot of aforestation [afforestation] is in progress, high
deer proof fences, crossed by high stiles. Drainage
+ planting are in progress. Here the Hebridean
or Lewisian Gneiss, the worlds oldest stone, is the
native rock + produces a sterile soil. Between
there + Durness is an area of undiferentiated [undifferentiated]
sandstone of poor fertility + badly overgrazed but
at Durness itself limestone is exposed + this
together with the blown shell sand has
made a rich soil. Here was a very old
cemetery with the flat tombstones. We then
retraced our steps to Laxford Bridge + turned
west by a very narrow coast road bordered
by areas of peat + bare rock. Everywhere
the peat diggings were in evidence. At the
small village of Tarbet, snuggled in a cove
opposite Handa Island were 7 crofts, each
