- with its pathetic scratching. The houses were
the white houses, + I don't recall sky of
the thatched black houses. The white
houses were built in the early 1800's when
a gov't [government] loan of L [pounds] 100 +/- was made for
the improvement of croft housing. This
repayable in 10 or 11 years. It was Sunday + no
one was visible as the sabbath is kept here
with the greatest strictness. Small terraces
had been built with great care to serve
as gardens.
I note all along here that heather burning
at this altitude is a mistake as it permits
the invasion of bracken + the loss of the
area as either grassland or heath.
We visited a Dr MacDonald + his wife in
Scourie. He is the Parish medico + has this
entire area, while there are 3 different churches
in Scourie itself. In a long discussion of
church matters here I learned that the "Fencing
of the Table" has been so severe that there are
no church members + no communicants. There
is no light, love or comfort in this religious
interpretation only fear + resignation.
We camped by the roadside 10 miles below
Scourie + went to sleep with a cuckoos notes in
our ears. Heard a corncrake at Scourie.
