Dear Directors of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association in Victoria,
We are writing to you about the sudden death of Ma Lian caused by a westerner without any reason. Ma Lian was the son of Ma Yuan Geng, whose hometown was Tang Ke Village, Tai Shan County. Ma Lian worked as a chef in a restaurant run by a westerner. Having worked only for three days, he was found dead in the kitchen at 12:05pm on 25th this month. When the news reached Chinatown, the Chinese there called for a government doctor and together went to the restaurant for an examination. It was found that he was shot to death. The bullet went through his face, he died on the spot. When the police was reported it was too late to capture the criminal, who ran away. Due to the persistence of the good-hearted government doctor, the police detained the family and neighbors of the criminal for interrogation. We consider that it is a case involving human life, it takes time to bring to an end. If we want to win this case we need to have assistance of someone who has expertise in dealing with lawsuit. And we should take preemptive measures as to unite all the Chinese to call for a justice trial. We venture to ask for your advice and help to win the case so that the dead could be finally rehabilitated and the living could lead a life without worrying being bullied.
Yours sincerely
The Chinese community in Rossland
