  • 171 sprawling head first past the goal post. The secondtime he came at me, I didn’t side step at all, hut gave him all my weight, first having safely cleared the bsll. He sprawled this time for fair, hut backward instead of forward, I might mention that he kept at a safe distance for the rest ofthe game. Good job for him' too, for I’d have walloped him one for luck if he.had tried it again. As you may have observed from the heading of this letter, we have changed our sphere of action again. At present we are in a fair sized town some twenty miles back of the line, but expect to be on the job in very short time, ’Tie said that the Handers variety of mud outrivals that of the Somme. Well, if it does, I can see dirty work ahead of us. However, -there's no use crossing your bridges till you come to them is there? Came up from Vimy by box car, entraining a4A8.30 P.M. and arriving at our destination at the ungodly hour of 3.30 A.M. The box cars apparently being needed, we were bundled out into the cold dark night, and forced to march four miles to our present billet. / The aforementioned billet is in the loft of an old barn, the lower floor being inhabited by pigs, cows, and sheep. As may be surmised the resultant animal odor reminds one of "Eau de Cologne" it’s so different. The loft itPelf is covered with some six inches of straw, so has that much to be said in its favor. Of course no one has a way cf ascertaining how many battalions have slept in the same straw before. We inherited it, and so far as I know, no oeneus has been taken of the fleas and lice hibernating in that much malingered straw, but why worry. The main thing is that it is softer and warmer than the hard boards. No, the roof isn’t exactly rainproof, as the kid and I discovered a couple of nights ago, when- a sudden rain storm coming on- we were foroed to hopout of bed and shift our bed end baggage elsewhere. Saw Charlie Mitchell for a few minutes the day we hit this burg, but haven't bumped into him since. He seems much thinner than he was the last time I saw him. Their shops are in this town so doubtless I’ll run accoss him again. Mighty glad to hear that that fourth parcel turned up all right. Sure, you can read those little books. Why not? I hardly imagine that they oontain any information thfet would be of value to the enemy. I’m sure that I have no idea whether the Red Cross or Y are grafting on the sox proposition. Have never heard of any instance where a soldier bought Red Cross sox, so until I do, will remain very sceptical. Just the same, however I think your work would be far more beneficial if sent direct to boys over here. A fellow oan never get enough sox in the winter. You bet we'd like some ourselves. At time of writing I’m wearing one white sook and one grey one, obtained from the divisional bath house.. And by the way, if you haven’t started on those sleeveless jerseys, the wool
