20 in 6 nests, 7 in 3 nests.
mostly of about the same age -
see photos. Their dirty grey instead
of black down, + their pinkish
gular pouch with small white
patch between the mandibles
readily distinguished these birds
from the tree nesting double-crested.
All Baird's nests were on
the rock ledges on the west
side of the islets, exposed to the
full glare of the sun. The
downies panted rapidly with their
throats + uttered a peculiar squawking
whistle
Peter Thornton reports large
colonies on Valdez + Stuart Islands.
