  • [male symbol] + [female symbol] Spruce Grouse - [male symbol] had tail all Black. No Gold to speak of on the rivers which were in full flood. One Fellow out of 5 making 75 c [cents] a day the rest nothing. Rabbits + moose plentiful a few mergansers + 2 prs [pairs] of geese on the river. May 10. Pulled up stakes + headed in for Quesnel, on the way Pat [Patrick McTaggart Cowan] shot a large porcupine [female symbol] very black + in good fur. Panned out 4 pans on 4 mile Cr. [Creek] getting 16 or 20 colours so ran into Quesnel to post letters then made camp on 4 mile. Moose + deer not very common. Shot a groundhog but it got down its hole Saw a field mouse + 2 rabbits. Audubon Warblers common, yellowthroat + Hermit thrush.
