Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection PublicThe Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

91. Two Worlds Monthly, for the increase of the gaiety of nations, Vol. 03, No. 03 (August, 1927)
- Title Tesim:
- Two Worlds Monthly, for the increase of the gaiety of nations, Vol. 03, No. 03 (August, 1927)
- Description:
- Edited by Samuel Roth, a New-York based publisher of literature and erotica, who pirated some of Joyce’s works and was responsible for publication of the first complete, albeit corrupt, text of Ulysses in the United states. After the struggle in getting Ulysses initially published, which resulted in Sylvia Beach's printing in Paris, problems were still not resolved in America. The ban on the book prompted the publication in Samuel Roth's Two World's monthly "an expurgated version of Joyce's Ulysses without the author's permission and without paying for reproduction rights." (The New York Times). In response, 167 authors, including Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence, Somerset Maugham, and T.S. Eliot, signed a letter of protest in defense of the author. Publishers, seeing how many important people were defending the book, and taking into account its popularity in Two Worlds Monthly began to solicit Joyce for publication of Ulysses in America. After a prolonged battle with Sylvia Beach, who at the time held the rights to publication, Joyce made a deal with Random House. Its appearance in America then sparked the famous court case United States vs. One Book Called Ulysses, where Judge John M. Woolsey decided that "whilst in many places the effect of Ulysses of the reader undoubtedly is somewhat emetic, nowhere does it tend to be an aphrodisiac. Ulysses may, therefore, be admitted into the United States." --Manhattan Rare Books Company. This issue is dedicated to E. Powys Mather and has the eleventh installment of Ulysses by James Joyce. Also includes a monetary offer to James Joyce from editor Samuel Roth to cover printing Ulysses without permission.

94. Tarr (1928)
- Title Tesim:
- Tarr (1928)
- Description:
- Tarr is a modernist novel written 1909-11, revised and expanded during 1914-15 and first serialized in the magazine The Egoist from April 1916 until November 1917. First published in America and England in 1918. A revised and final version was published in 1928. Wyndham Lewis, (1882–1957), artist and writer, is perhaps best known for forming a group of artists and writers known as the vorticists (a term created by poet Ezra Pound in early 1914). Ezra Pound arranged for Tarr, Lewis’s first novel, to be published in serial form in The Egoist magazine (1916-1917) while Lewis was serving in WWI. The 1918 edition digitized here is the first English edition, which was published by the Egoist Press shortly after the first American edition was published that same year. The copy of the 1918 edition in Special Collections is signed on the flyleaf by Gladys Anne Hoskyns, Wyndham Lewis's wife. The 1928 edition, published by Chatto and Windus, is the revised and final version. C.J. Fox donated both the 1918 and 1928 editions to Special Collections. For more information about C.J. Fox’s Wyndham Lewis Collection please see the exhibition catalogue The Lion and the Fox: Art and Literary Works by Wyndham Lewis from the C.J. Fox Collection (https://www.uvic.ca/library/locations/home/spcoll/documents/fox_exhibit_catalogue.pdf) and the finding aid for the C.J. Fox Collection (https://uvic2.coppul.archivematica.org/cyril-james-fox-fond). Lewis founded and edited Blast, a magazine featuring writing and artwork by artists affiliated with the vorticist movement, including Edward Alexander Wadsworth (1889-1949), Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891-1915), William Patrick Roberts (1895-1980), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972). Lewis also contributed his own artwork and writing to the magazine. The first issue of Blast appeared in July 1914 and the second issue, the “War Number,” came out in 1915 at the advent of the First World War. The movement largely lost momentum during the war. During his career Lewis published several volumes of literary criticism and satire, including The Art of Being Ruled (1926), Time and Western Man (1927), The Apes of God (1930), and Men without Art (1934). During the political tensions leading up to, and during, WWII, Lewis published Hitler (1931), Left Wings over Europe (1936), and Count Your Dead: They Are Alive! (1937). Later novels include The Revenge for Love (1937) and Self Condemned (1954). Lewis published two autobiographies: Blasting and Bombardiering (1937), based on his experiences during WWI, and Rude Assignment (1950).
