Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

We wired she was welcome, at a hotel nearby. Telegram to Korda asking for money; the scenario; decision on Refugee film. To Lugano: ordered two white Angora knitted caps for Laura, & Laura bought me a Joseph-coloured silk handkerchief case. American Antigua came: with an incorrect cover. Worked till 1.30. Reading Mark Twain's “Man who corrupted Hadleyburg” etc.

In Lugano bought toys for Laura's work-room – a Swiss village in a cellophane bag, 1 franc 20, a donkey and cart 1.50, a wooden cow 1.50. A silk handkerchief bag for Laura. First three answers to Int.Letter Apparently Jenny has not got the promised job at Denham. About 25 letters (between L & me) including congrats to Eddie on his knighthood & Tate Gallery appointment. Snow mountains in evening pink. Karl said: “You'd expect God to come foward, hat in hand. All my own work!” Worked until nearly 2.

Str is going to Germany tomorrow to help her sister move flat. Nickel Schw. turned up. To the cinema after supper with Karl. Old fashioned bad sentimental film about a professor and the illegitimate child of the janitor's daughter – by Pirandello. But nice walking back, the snow having cleared. Tried to but could not read Michael Sadleir's These Foolish Things .

Letter from Short, via British warship & London, saying that Gelat was locked up a week before id est February 12 & that young Juan said that it was the Dr.'s doing, but that he had been assured that 'nothing serious' would come of it. ( Daily Telegraph says that the Insurgent offensive at Madrid has failed again, the troops being back where they were a fortnight ago.) Bad headache all day, finally cured by a walk to Lugano with Karl & Nickel. Nickel & Schw. had come to coffee. Schw did not take the Gelat news at all personally. Epilogue & Year of Damage . Miss Wright not coming; says that the Claudius script is 'not ready' according to Korda, though shooting started a fortnight ago! Answer to Int.Letter from Eddie Marsh.
