Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection PublicThe Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

111. Letter from Eric Gill to Herbert Read, October 19, 1929
- Title Tesim:
- Letter from Eric Gill to Herbert Read, October 19, 1929
- Description:
- Part of a collection of correspondence from Eric Gill to Sir Herbert Read. Gill was a renowned early 20th century English printmaker, typeface designer, and sculptor. In this letter Gill responds to an invitation to lunch with Read and "Mr. Goldsmith" and "Mr. Lambert". He also mentions a recent article of Read's and debates the public function of artists. A penciled note signed H.R. on the bottom of the page says the invitation was the first step in approaching Gill to create a sculpture for "the new Broadcasting House".

112. Letter from E.M. Forster to Alec Randall, December 21, 1929
- Title Tesim:
- Letter from E.M. Forster to Alec Randall, December 21, 1929
- Description:
- Part of a collection of letters written by E.M. Forster to Sir Alec Randall. They concern, firstly, his trip to Rumania, where he stayed with the Randalls; a tour in France in 1928; and his journey home. Later letters include references to such literary people as Herbert Read, Harold Monro and T.S. Eliot, plus a mention of reading James Joyce's "Ulysses". He also refers to his visit to Africa and his sentiments about the Spanish Civil War and W.W.II. Most of the later letters are signed "Morgan". E. M. Forster was born in London. He is principally known as a novelist and was associated with the Bloomsbury Group, which included Virginia Woolf. Among his best known works are "A Room With A View" (1911) and "A Passage To India" (1924). Many of his novels have been dramatized. He also wrote short stories, drama, non-fiction and criticism. He died at King's College, Cambridge, where he had resided since the mid 1940s. His friend, Sir Alec Randall was with the British legation in Bucharest, Rumania, and was later appointed to serve in Rome. Forster did not find his trip to Africa interesting.
