Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

'Get from under that bus, Galloway': 'Drawing the coverts at Malquoits' To 5 Nottingham St. Alan took us round houses in Hampstead: no use. [*] Norman, Alan, Audrey Beecham, Honor, L & I lunch at Café Royal. [*] Called on Tanny Brown North Way1 region: better. Chance meeting with Jenny & Peggy Hamilton in Baker St. Maisie back from Japan: dissociated Japanese people from army. Bought £3.10/- a 16th Century Spanish chest with drawers inlaid ivory hunting scenes (Mills) & a trade-bead necklace thrown in. Coffee at Prince Oysters at Princes (L, Alan & I). Supper at Canuto's with Maisie (who told of the visit to Her & His Excellency Tweedsmuir.) Home: arrived 11.12. Met by H in a car & dressing gown punctually at Cranleigh

Laura stayed in bed for lunch & in the evening I got a chill or something after a walk home from Cranleigh with Alix, & was sick & had no supper, & stayed in bed, & read of early pilgrimages to the Holy places. Karl was up in London looking for flats for us. Saw one not really possible one in Park Crescent.

A lovely day but a depressing feeling that England & France acquiesce in the Italian occupation of Majorca. Walk back from Cranleigh in moonlight with Alix. Alan frightened us by wiring that Audrey had meningitis. He meant laryngitis.

Miss illum Robert Alan Beryl Laura Harry Alix Robert Alan etc Right conclusions are never so conspicuously right as when the protagonists of right have discussed irrelevant mediaeval and Hellenistic parallels or dilated circumlocuously on hypothetical ideologies such as Erastian and Acuanite slanders on reality, although they possibly somewhat carelessly rely on comments which previous scholars have carelessly construed as having meant something previously; because they inevitably undergo have undergone rigourous annotation and therefore are completely unsuitable material for treatment in by illiterate futures. - Oct 16 Sat. Alan's birthday. Reassuring telegram from Random House about books & fees. Request from Grigson to Laura & me to contribute to a New Verse number about Auden! I went early to Cranleigh with Harry to buy presents for Alan & Alix's aunt Mrs May who has a birthday tomorrow & is coming with Maisie. In the antique shop angered at being asked 15/- for a 2 peseta bull-fighting plate. Bought Alan a walking stick, two toy-soldiers & a black woolly lamb (a pull-over already); & Chinese china swans for aunt. Alan & Beryl came, & we played the word-game after suppr & talked. He had a birthday cake Laura doing scenario with Karl who got cross with a cold & was sent home to nurse it at Marigold. I went over Belisarius but wrote none fresh. Beryl & Alan at Holmcroft.

- Oct 17 Sunday Alix & I respectively getting breakfast trays for Harry & Laura. Alix said 'Lives of Wives.' Three version of a sonnet ' The Young Captain ' Visited Karl in bed. Maisie came with Mrs May & brought, from herself, a Chinese hat for me, Canadian moccasins & an Indian ring for Laura; from Julie a quilted blue jacket for Laura & a length of silk for me – for Laura. Hit target 3 times with same arrow. Not much constructive talk with Maisie, Alan or Beryl (who hates her job) because too many people about. A lovely day.

We ragged Alix for being a Fascist because she believed that the Italian volunteers would really be withdrawn from Spain. Laura sorts out the Communist etc letters for her Letter book .
