Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Dec 18 Sat. Saw Catherine off to Teignmouth. She lost or left behind everything possible but I got her safe into the train. (Shopped with her at Selfridges) On return: found 'Molly Morgan' came for a talk, a schoolmaster in Rhodesia. Then Mary Lucy phoned from Morecambe. She had escaped with her two children from John via Belfast to Nan & Wilfred in Cumberland. We telegraphed her £10. Then got Inspector Thompson of St John's Wood police here for advice as to procedure if John comes gunning – he threatened to kill us as well as Mary. 12 pages Belisarius ; and a sore throat.

- Dec 23 Thursday In bed, stomach & headache Struggled through Chapter 5 A.G. (& John) came in the morning. Kirsch from O.K.! John putting things right with Laura. John & Phip Philip both rang me up (inspired by Charles, I suppose) about Jenny's alleged connexion with David Willmer & the other 3 who did a jewel robbery-with-violence in a Knightsbridge hotel. Jenny has not had anything to do with them for months. Maisie to supper gave me moss-agate earrings (& to Laura a golden lacquer box). Left her bag behind, as Norman last night his hat: Laura is uniting these two things in a Scotch marriage. Catherine rang up that Sam's bike was lost.
