Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Feb 28 Tuesday Laura said: 'I write so well anyone might mistake me for a hypocrite.' Another joke about Marie's young man 'M.Salsafie' (corruption of Ça suffit ) She borrowed nine francs to buy a Pris Unic hair comb: then more money. Laura asked: 'another comb?' Leonie said that there were two M.Salsifies who alternately waited for Marie on her days out. Laura said. That 'Ah, that's why she wanted two combs.' Another: Laura asked me 'Have you no place for unanswered letters?' “Yes, a beautiful place.” “Then why do I find odd letters tucked away in books?” “Because you look in the wrong books.” Heavy cold starting. * French British recognise Franco [figure – a bracket } links "French" and "British" indicating both recognise Franco]

- Enclosure – Letter from LR to RG about his Hostage poem Dearest Robert March 1 seems right for answering your letter of January 16. Let's call it a World birthday (the world seems to forgotten that it has one). About your Hostage poem. You're wrong about the guns. You tried to state is? this the Joke, but the joke isn't that you're a hostage in this fortress, I think, but rather: The fortress fancies it is besieged, the guns are its own. You beg the commander not to fire: 'The enemy is a friend'. You're wrong really to do that: the guns must be spent. Then only do they the fortress windows for looking out of. Don't pretend you haven't had guns of your own and locked away – set them all off. Yours for love and peace to the poor sun-gods and all that bottling up Laura
