Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Ap 10 Easter Monday Got up early to see Ethel off All five of us walked back from the station (where Laura nearly kept Ethel's witch cloak by mistake) by the Lake. There is apple & cherry & plum-blossom and almost-peach and beds of violets & primroses, & celandines (pink primroses & white violets near the house) and spotted orchids. Jays, pies, sulphur, orange-tip, cabbage whites. The chestnut trees out, not the beeches or oak yet, but the hazels beginning. Very hot. Bellamy given to the Hotel Ouest The McCormacks came via Avignon from Jugoslavia Yugoslavia : so pleased to see one another. They gave A & B J n slippers, & Dorothy gloves & Laura heavy gilt earrings & me two silver bobbles. Proofs, packing, labels until 2 am

- Ap 12 Wed. Léonie is secretly engaged to the commis at the farm 'Montague's negro' so Anita won't engage her for a few months only. Anita keeps on 'phoning for reassurance about the War: this is another Crisis time – French troops called up, Germans massing on various frontiers etc. Woodpecker going all day. Proofs. Very hot weather. Dorothy has made a wand for Tom (oak, with a knot-hole) & round objects for Julie & Katharine, each, out of bark of a rotten oak branch, & a hornbeam heart-shaped thing for Laura.

We went to Rennes to say goodbye to Anita & Juan Showery day with brilliant sun: Laura bought shoes, we bought pink flowers for Dorothy & a camellia for Beryl & Dorothy bought me a rose-&-grey silk stock. Walking round the old part of We ate at 7 rue Nemours: Francisca, Miguel, Anita (who could only eat apple compote), Juan, Jeanine, the Mallorquin commis , Gabriel: Laura, Alan, Beryl, Dorothy, me: & everything was lovely. Poor Arthur Barker has failed.

Mme Perou, Paulette, Mlle Louet, le Grec (Post OfficeP.O.), M.Bouliou (Pinson's wicked clerk) two little nephews (Jean & Louis) and we five. Jokes about Alan (Un bock – visiter à M. Pinson. Un faveur a demander ) about Dorothy in general, Alan's imitation of M. Schoine the tailor, mine of Madame Perouin (je suis si oublieùse – ce bon M. Chamberlain qui a sauvé la jeunesse d'Europe ) Laura to Paulette was 'ma pauvre petite madame'. We were made to drink too much and everything was lovely.

Cigarettes to M. Pinson who wanted reassuring about war. Nono now very affectionate suddenly: he is to go en pension to Léonie, waiting for us to take him to Deyá. All had headaches all day. We eat 'cachets Faivres' Laura's watch that I broke repaired.
