Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- March 22 Friday. Gelat brought Salamo's barrel, prunes, wine, vine supports. Poem: 3 drafts And Should I Fail? (yesterday's) Wrote to A.E.S.G. asking her to investigate a deaf-appliance for Sam. Planted seeds as follows: Mignonette Sweet William, edged Sweet William, plain Ageratum Balsimina Salpiglossis African Marigolds Zinnia -------------- Wall -------------- A ver. and put ashes round. Flowers for house: stocks, freesia and vermouth, marigolds & silver stalk, periwinkles, the English sort, bluer than the ones here. First day Josepha worked with us. Holes dug for vine-arbour supports, and these cemented in, Gelat supervising. Three olive, two almond. He also put in another row, as a surprise, along the torrent. Took Salamo for a walk to the Mirador: on the way took a cutting of orange ball from Son Bujosa. Put the prickly plants from the Fonda into pots. The wine is from Santa Maria & cost 45[cts] a litre — claret. Roca whom I met on the road had seen bull-fights with mastiffs in his youth, at Palma. Two dogs went in at a time: if the bull was too much for them two more. Went straight for the bull's ears & throat. A young bull: he wasn't killed, but returned to the toril when the President decided. The bull was the victor until a dog got hold of his genitals: then this dog was the victor.

- March 24th Sunday. A very hot day the first for a long time now. Sat about in the sun on the woodpile and looked at the white, brown and peacock butterflies in the rosemary bush. Further suggestions about Germany money: that Carl should go and spend it. Difficulties about getting things to Palma: almost everything is dutiable except jewellery, & that would be difficult to get out of Germany. Finally Gelat suggested that a Soller man should be made my representative & should buy me a car in Germany which could then be resold with about 2% loss. Also Carl might be called up. War-scare on island via France. Took Salamo to Lluchalcari. In afternoon locked up the house & went to bed: both tired. Wrote to Middleditch for statement authorizing List to pay me or my representative the money.

- March 25 Monday Lined Laura's jewel case with velvet and plush & silk. Pasted her black oil-cloth fish-horse on brown paper. Another very hot day. Read the Thin Man . Went to Lluchalcari with Laura, Carl, Salamon. They, tea, I, beer. Laura went over What Then? with me; made suggestions. Letter from Harrison Smith about film version of Claudius ; offered 10% royalty on [the] book. I replied would contract to write one film story: and second, if Korda does Agrippa film. Terms 10%, 12% at [$]2O,000, 15% at [$]40,000. 1000 dollars advance on signing contract. If he didn't like that let him leave it; I was bored with Claudius . Wrote to Times Morgue: declining to do T.E. Lawrence memoir Gelat had seen a number of people who might help getting money from Germany. Salamó has had a cold in his eyes for the last three days. Wrote to [Banco] Hispano Palma asking them to wire todo arreglado . At Lluchalcari took cuttings of snowball plant and black patterned-leafed geranium plant. The first probably won't grow: too far advanced, and wrong phase of the moon. Sent off Second Leaf to Oxford, Cambridge, British Museum, Congress Library , Manchester, 3 to Ethel Herdman. - March 26 Tuesday Another hot day. Bad nightmare. responsible for saving people from a burning house, a very tall building in process of construction in the middle of a university or public school: half built somewhat Charterhouse . 100 prisoners and 120 workmen in danger. Had to go and get a ladder: no outside leaving my lieutenant in charge with fire brigade of 20. Could get no outside cooperation, ladder too short too heavy to move, & one leg broken off with rungs. When finally got it to building this was collapsing. I dodged falling bits of roof. My cooperator lieutenant, a mixture of a 2nd lieut. I knew in Wales in the war, had done his and Carl, had done his best. Only eleven dead bodies; with identity discs. Nobody minding much. Carl then dismissed his squad, giving angry German military orders. I said that there would be an inquiry and somebody would be punished. Gelat came: planted vines alongside drive and two more for the arbour near the front door. Staked up a split lemon-tree. Replanted the camelia. I went to the village with poem of Laura Why of Wind to type: to Miguel to hurry up gauze screenings, to Rosa to ask for cottage for Isabel's mother. Paid Estanco 50 pts on a/c. Last oranges from Can Juni. Two more drafts of What Then? With Salamo to sea. Bathed, the first time this year. Salamo frightened of rushing noise of stream & sea. Timber came for arbour. Letter from Jack Lindsay saying that actors were under no financial obligation to their patrons and that madida lux solis is possible Republican Latin. Wrote to deny this, firmly, for the second time, quoting references from dictionary. Got Tony's birth certificate from Secretario. Checked typing of two poems of Lauras.

Uneconomical to do this work: but Gelat said I couldn't get it done before he returned with the camión. Franciscita and her mother came. Carl took Salamo for his walk because I was busy. Laura wrote to Michael Roberts on our joint behalf. Did a few pages of Ch.6 of Antigua & gave them to Karl to type. Chick Telegram about Honor's baby. Replied. Notice from solicitor about James Tait Black Memorial Prize: will remit money if I accept. Accepted. Wrote to Harrison Smith & Middleditch informing. Thanked Contract for Claudius film from Elliot with its refrain “all territories & countries in the world except Majorca.” Thanked, & congratulated Buchan about Canada.

- March 29 Friday Eyes still sore from creosote. Let Sebastian-of-the-pines do paint the other arbour which was finished yesterday except mason-work. Gelat came & tied up vines on upper arbour. Promised us 8O kilos of grapes next year from lower one. Signed and sent off contract. Wrote to A.G. Wrote to Eliot(E). Gelat undertook to find house for Isabel's mother. Went [for] a walk to see road repairs: up to bad turning and back by big pines. Mason came: did not finish. In afternoon went with Gelat (Laura & I), Salamo & donkey to see Es Piñets and the Roca de sa Rosa, above Molí: which Gelat has been able to buy for 6000 pts left after selling Molí land at price stipulated, needing only 6000 [pts] to buy. Worth double. He hasn't the money so we will fund buy it. Visited the new deposito being built at Can Medo Madó . At the Molí took cutting of a white-flowering shrub. Pension came. Took homeopathic creosote: which helped eyes: at any rate they got better. Laura went over my Focus . Another fire-dream. This time I was a subordinate at a futile task by stupid superiors. I was in the front compartment of a train going 70 miles an hour. The fire was in the rear coaches but the authorities wouldn't stop the train.
