Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection PublicThe Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- April 1 Monday. To Palma, early. Dentist 9.3O, charged 4O [pts] for 3 visits. Collected pension. Incident of bumbling army-officer with green & red reg. tie waiting for pension saying to officer no. 2 “I see you belong to my old corps.” This no. 2 was the sort of officer one would draw if only allowed to draw in parallels and oblongs. Bumbler was colour-blind. I had long before registered 'Scots Guards', so bumbler had to apologise, he was only Sherwood Foresters. The man was called Major Fotheringay—Hannibal as far as I could hear. Long wait at Banco March. Laura & Karl and Isabel did all general shopping. Bought typewriter 800 pts, less 375 for Laura 's old typewriter. Bought Laura early 19th century emerald and diamond ring for 190 pts. At Casas bought brazier shovel for Fábrica: theirs had been broken for the last six years — family joke. Also old glass bottle, Hapsburg seal for 2 pts. and 3 blue plates 3 pts each. Casas threw in an old wooden-stand suitable for my Luna cannon ball. Lunch Mallorca. Coffee and cream éclairs at Schwarz & Strenge's. Schwarz gave me a sesterce of Claudius with Civil Crown and OB Cives Servatos. In recognition gave them the blue plates. Gave Focus to Esperanza. Ball for Francisquito. Home at 6.30. Notice of 4800 dollars on way to Hispano Bank and letter from Middleditch giving authority to collect German money but counselling against smuggling. Alice had her kittens, all black, three, in bush by electric light post.

- Ap 5 Friday. To village to see Gelat. Still in pain but no fever. Told me that he had been selling Son Canals in imagination; Bernado is leaving Deyá for Palma and will probably get rid of Son Canals, first renting it to Anita's uncle. If Gelat can get the job of buying and reselling the property, it will leave him with a nice bit in hand because there are always buyers for small bits of olive land. Wrote to Member of Oxford University asking him to ask a question in Parliament about non-payment of royalties to British authors while Hitler and Company profit from their works. Cold wind. Artichokes to Strenge , and Gelat's sister who gave us the plants. Mended my candlestick at last. Went over Heffer catalogue with Laura & Karl & ordered 9 books. Some proofs from Esperanza: now have half. Wrote to Gamages about collapsible boats.

- Ap 7 Sunday Wrote to Middleditch asking to arrange Harrison Smith money to be sent direct here: also asking for English money to be sent to Chiswick bank: also discussing terms for book of Claudius film. Solomon learning to keep to the path. Went to Gelat's: he discussed possibilities of electrical power sold to Valldemossa: 8 or 9 thousand [pts] a year immediately on a 50,000 outlay, because the Valldemosa power-station is dependant on a machine, always breaking down, which cost 1400 [pts] a month in fuel alone. Strenge & Schwarz to tea and then to village and then back: swapping stories. At the café Schwarz wanted to pay. We said “ Todo esta pagado ” . Schwarz said ironically “Ah if only some national conference would say that to Germany.” Laura said “ Hitler would only say that the German nation was insulted.” Laura and I decided to publish Epilogue ourselves with Heffer as distributor: also perhaps James Reeves 's poems and Tom 's novel. - Ap 9th Tuesday Soldered the tap of the clothes-boiler: this is the first soldering job I have ever done and I did it by using the top of the Primus as a hot cup in which to hold the liquid solder and pouring it round the tap. It turned out all right. Checked Focus . To Miguel: told story of Gelat and man who came to court Ca l'Abat daughter on a horse: his trousers soiled with horse-sweat. Gelat lent him a new pair. Miguel thought this businesslike. Gelat dressed, in chair. Gelat said that suitor was unsuccessful: otherwise it would have been better business both for daughter & himself. Suggested air-cooled tiles for kitchen extension. The Costa d'Or 'direct light' installation works well. We will have to buy one too, if possible to get cheap. Turbines to be fitted today. Supervised boiling of boiler. Sent Ribbons and Winder income-tax refund claim, also wrote to Middleditch asking to make the L.R.,R.G.... payments proportionate to earnings.
