Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection PublicThe Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Ap 11th Thursday Took dictation of Laura 's letter to James Reeves: outlining our publishing scheme for Epilogue , Tom's book, his poems, Laura's, mine etc. Took to Karl to type. Karl typed letter to List asking him to order a Klepper-boat & accessories and charge to my a/c. Gelat suggested building a boat-house also useful as bathing house. Walnuts in leaf. Black-painted iron-wire supports on Ca'n Barceló wall and Can Torrent gate. Laura & I planned benches at Can Torrent. Sirocco started again. Bathed: did not take Salamo in as he had a bath yesterday. Letters from Arthur Barker, A.G., Guy Thomson a cousin, Margaret Russell and Australian broadcasting people. Focus back, corrected. We went over it and found more errors, but not bad. Carl took it to Juan, who will take it in tomorrow. Arthur Barker thinks it possible to get money via Curtis Brown, so will not order Klepper boat until that is settled. Carl suggested living in [Can] Torrent `while unoccupied.

- Ap 13th Saturday Went with Gelat down to the place where the road is being mended. Estimate 5000 pesetas as the cost of the repairs. To carry the road to the sea will be worth 2500 more. Very little water in the Torrent. Rosa came, brought my blue trousers and waistcoat, but too small. Gelat made Rosa cry, as Laura had already done. Rosa did not know of the Cura's lies and machinations. She may be able to end the matter without scandal: the cura has already forfeited his right to six months occupation of the house, by demanding money for leaving and his bluff with the Bishop has been called. Wrote out my will. Stocks over with, wild gladiolus beginning. Cuttings have all died except aloes and black-centred geranium. Bath. Gamage folding boats 1/2 the price of German ones. Letter from R.Welsh saying that amount of Tait Black award is £116.4.5, which is being paid into my bank. Sent receipt. Laura Karl & I planned Homilies for press. Focus final proofs. Laura says I am looking much better since I have taken daily walk with Solomon; Karl says I look young again, before I looked an old man. I am certainly in good condition. Have done no real work for 3 weeks.

- Monday Ap 15th Up at 6. To Palma with Gelat at 8. New black shoes 40 pts. Umbrella for sun 50. Mat for Can Torrent. WatchClocks to be mended. Table centres runners. Nothing at Margarita Mateu's. Sabater asked Pts. 3125 for 1000 copies of Epilogue (75,000 words) then came down to 2450 [pts]. Said we would think about it. Can Torrent lamp bought, after unsuccessful visit to Gordiola. Lunch in new locale of Mallorca. Felt sick from bumpy early start. Had to take three coñacs . Visit to Library of Circulo. Laura took Troy notes for 2 hours. Then turned out by page boy. Not much in library anyhow. Gelat, with whom we talked business about Cura, escrituras , Valldemossa lighting etc all the way in, went home by camión . When I got back felt sick, too sick to discuss Epilogue , so Laura & Karl did so without me. Notice of award of James Tait prize in papers. Checking up day's cash-leavings found we had 1093 pesetas out of 1100 we took in. As Duran was 40 odd [pts], my shoes 40 [pts], Laura's bill at Bonet 100 [pts] and more, 88 [pts] a debt to Karl, umbrella 50 [pts], this was queer. It has usually happened v.v. before.
