Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection PublicThe Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Aug 8 Thursday. Check Transcribed checks in Richards . Laura dictated letters (to Karl)— Korda, Sabater. I went to sea (about 15 Catalans). Cloudy & hot. Then to village for morning post: half James' proofs from Sabater, which I checked. Remainder by afternoon post. Went over my checks in Troy with Laura discussing, chiefly, Menelaus's spare spear, and what became of it. Laura finally stuck it butt–spiked into the ground. Pots came from Palma, & sugar: but no plums yet. Hot wind Laura got off two chapters of Troy to Constable with a letter. Laura & I went over James's proof, finishing it at 1 p.m. all except a point that only James can supply. Laura decided on a rest now for a few days.

Laura & I talked of supper at Costa d'Or but didn't go. Laura wrote "We are the Resurrection" poem & read it to me: went over my recent poems with me. It was agreed to scrap Address to Myself & I to rewrite two more. To village, where Gelat told us of a visit to the road of another colonel, disguised as a peasant. Nice letter from Gordon confirming Honor's view. Thelen has apparently finished translating the Schwarz book. Bed early.

- Aug 14 Wednesday Gelat came with Paloni from the Vinyet brought figs: told us details of his investigation. It is known about the denuncio in the village & also Gelat's likelihood of finding out the name. In the morning went over and added to my introduction to the Richards book. Same in the afternoon, apart from Sea. A very cool day; sea rough but warm. At the village practised dance–steps with Laura in the Sala. Then did the translation gap between Karl's part of Almost Forgotten Times and Thelin's. Today I wore my Mallorquin waistcoat with the many pewter buttons for the first time. At 4 o'clock heard mewing from garden. Found new-born black kitten in the pimiento–bed. Laura came out & cherished it.
