Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

James & Karl did Focusses : Laura started hers. T.E. stuff as far as beginning of typescript. Have had a recurrent sore (evening) throat for the last few days. Laura read out her Blake findings. We James went through Browning. Began a brassero brasero . Laura suggests Karl going in for humorous writing. With Gelat to inspect holes dug for almond trees.

Late home after a nice time at Macarena's & first film for two years (news reel chiefly) while waiting for M to open.

- Nov 30 Saturday T.E. again. Going quickly. And letter to Jenny congratulating & sending £5 : and to Amy Graves saying that can't supply her with German marks. In evening Ran down the road to torrent & up by Bujosa with Salamo Scandal at Can La : Bartolomé the mason's wife attacked his sister who came home from France expecting to live with them. Father has also been rejected. Wife (Italian) tore off sister's earrings, & scratched her throat. Bartolomé then flung her donwstairs. Painful impression in village. Punch & sandwiches at Can Caballo. Then dancing here till a late hour.

- Dec 1st Sunday Had drunk too much: felt rotten all day. Worked on T.E. finished L & A part. Gelat has planted 70 fruit trees at Can Mado. Pepe Rowed Pepe for neglecting work. Will start in tomorrow. Ran again. Too much: had to sleep it off. Focus in preparation. Laura wrote characters of focals, but tore it up. She has been up to 3 or 4 o'clock every night. Then wrote another. Up to 3.45 a.m. After supper we discussed Karl's humorous novel.

- Dec 4 Wednesday Palma after morning on T.E. Took Focus in: at 3 o'clock. Then To Fronton Balear to see Pelota . Betted on Red & lost ( Cantarrabia Cantabria & Loyola). Then to Triana where by going out early I did not see desnudismo which Laura James and Karl said was rather horrible. (Had done shopping at Margarita Mateu's, various small gifts — needle case for Gordon, silver rattle-whistle & gipo for Julian, painted tray for John, table centre & binding for Maisie, frame for James. Also mirror frame for James at Casas 80 p. & some 1840ishengravings 5 pesetas for 15. Handkerchiefs for James, silk stockings for Laura, tie pin for Karl (30 [pts.]) gold pendant for Maisie with red and green flowers (50 p[ts].) & diamond buttons to be converted into earrings for Laura (flat-cut 1790ish) for 300 p[ts].[)] My gold watch repaired. Also bought towels. Laura reading Richards . Back at 2:30 a.m. Hot bottle leaked, had to sleep in my workroom. Slept till 12.
