Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

Laura did a bit of the Heathen , which I checked. Walk with L & K down Tottenham Court road as far as Camden Town A.B.C. First draft of a poem The Jealous Man . To Café Royal L. K. & I to meet Norman, Len & Jane. Drank "Pimm" sherry, gin, orange, borage in a tankard. (Teddy Wolfe & Mother). Brought Maisie last minute birthday present of cheese, & cherries in Marrachino maraschino . Found her closeted with S.H.Wood.

- Monday Nov 2 Rang up Black as usual it being Monday about that £1000 which has not been paid yet. He advised me to write to Korda. I did. News from Madrid bad again. Gordon has once more broken with Molly 'finally'. Note of protest to Book Society News for saying I had given up poetry. Laura to Doctor. She is tired but clearly better. Jenny to lunch, & Julie, & Tom. Gave Jenny a silver gilt Chinese poison ring – pearls, green jade, a ruby (30/-) and she collaborated very competently with Laura in the Bulton scenario. Two more workings at The Jealous Man . Supper at Prada with T. J, Laura, Karl, Maisie: whom L. gave her emerald & Diamond ring.

- Tuesday Nov 3. To Rusby's for hair. To Caledonian market: rain, almost nobody there. Bought Georgian crystal buckle-brooch 12/6, Georgian gold ring with garnets & three bad emeralds 12/6, Lambeth tobacco jar 4/-. Lunch at The “Nag”. In afternoon wrote a long letter to L.H. [*] Joyce Reeves came: & did not know her grandmother was dead: Grief & consternation because she had been away at a false address. Gerald Gould died – the only two bad reviews by him in News Chronicle & Observer Dinner with Rebecca West & Henry Andrews, Tom, Julie, Laura [*]at Boulestins. Woodcock (10/6 a go) Clos du Tart (red Burgundy,) figues flambées . Then to their flat at Orchard Court: where Ralph Isham came, mad as a hatter, talking fascism. I swung him round a pivot: appealing to his Anglo-Saxon faith in morale natural as opposed to Dago morale. He talked Lawrence & Boswell in maitre d'hotel accent. Laura said “American top to his face, false European jaw.” Laura wore red & gold turban, Julie's dress, the crystal buckle brooch on red silk.

- Wednesday. Nov 4 Working again at ' The Jealous Man ' John and Lucie came. Honor also. Bad news from Madrid. Went to Watt with T.E.letters which Laura & I had gone over for possibles. Arranged for him to sell them, not giving right to reprint. Lunch at Prada Lots of friends about Sherry party at Tom & Julie's. Heard from Schw & Anita that only way to get letters to Mallorca is via Italy. Present: L, Karl, Tom, Julie, Honor, Norman, Len, Jane, John, Lucie, James, Gordon, Joyce, Sally, Jenny, Kyllmann, Bridget, Jeffrey Mark [s] , his sister, three friends of Tom's, myself. (Lucie in lift with Honor & me told us that 2 people had been killed in it at different times. Morbid. It happened up the street at Glaxo works, a rope lift.) Then upstairs at Prada, soup, celery, haddock each paying our shot – L, Karl, Tom, Julie, Honor, Gordon, Len, Jane, John, Lucie, Sally, Kyllmann, Bridget, Jeffrey Marks['] sister, Norman.(Sally, O.K., Lucie, Maisie talking international politics)

- Thursday Nov 5 * Tom & Julie's last day. To Constable's with Laura to talk about specimen page of Trojan Ending for which L is writing preface. Lunch at Prada – Mrs Lloyd, John John's brother,Lucie, Tom, Julie, Karl, Gordon, Honor, Laura myself. Rested in afternoon. Pallas money came. Supper with Tom, Julie, Karl, L & I at flat. Tom & Julie likes Honor best of new friends. (Gordon has plumped himself miserably at Arkesden). To Dorchester L, Tom, Julie, & Maisie & I to see Jenny dance. Show much slicker. Jenny did an acrobatic show turn we hadn't seen before .. . Laura wearing white gold-brocaded jacket, red velvet skirt, red & gold cap, gold chain, black mantilla. Two Three bottles of champagne. excellent food including foie gras on chicken. Sent note round to Jenny by page signed 'Father'. She replied as opposite. Goodbye to Tom & Julie in taxi at 3. am.

- Friday Nov 6th Laura slept till 12 or so. I wrote letters and things. To Caledonian market. Bought large patchwork quilt £2, old family teapot 1/-, Wedgewood coffee pot 2/-, 18 more marbles at 1d each, a number of lace bobbins with beads, – 3/9d in all, a pinchbeck clasp 5/- Sent Lucie clasp & the best ivory lace bobbins complete with beads, but first taking enough beads from the bobbins to make a necklace, which I did on dental floss with a 6d clasp. Supper at Dinner at Ward and Dorothy L, K, I and A Chitty the architect of many a corset factory and penguin pool. Walked home all the way down Primrose Hill. 40 minutes.

Laura to Bow Street for Alien registration; Karl to Oxford to stay with Allen for a night; I to Dorland Hall Book Exhibition & then to Constable to suggest better S.Z.P. display. (Brandy & soda with Kyllmann at a pub) * Catherine for her half term. Went with her to Dodsworth film, then to supper at España in Wardour St. Sad Catalan: “ Moros a la costa – no al Capital.” Italian fascist at next table. Then to Kermesse Héroique . French but good (Confessor, dwarf, duke, Burgomester Burgomaster 's wife) & Pavlova in a historical survey of her dances. Jenny gave me a silver brooch made of minute dials of watches, & to L an engagement book.
