Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Wed. 25 Nov Watt sent typed letters of T.E. to me. They are being offered to Messrs Walt Maggs for sale. Telephone talk with Sally. Took Ward's photograph of Alice to be passe-partouted and accidently met Len: he came home to lunch & discussed the international situation (which absorbs everything) Thinking that England would isolate Italy from Germany and attack her within 3 months. L & I said no, no war. [*] Had tooth out: left molar, with injection. The dentist expected an hour's work; but it came out all in one, not in pieces. Jenny to supper: discussed the question of her living alone. Wanted to remain at Curzon House, but for the thefts. Maisie afterwards: Laura discussing with her appropriate action in present crisis. [*] Going over another (rewritten) chapter of ' The Heathen '.

Jenny & I food at Rules oyster soup, Jenny, corn on cob. Then saw her to Dorchester.

- Friday. Nov 27 Viscount Carlow rang me up and I went to see him: talked over Lawrence book position. Showed me his books & paintings & was extremely nice. Wanted to clear up whole position. Jenny to lunch. Talked over scenario treatments with her. Laura gave her pansy ring. In afternoon Rebecca West came, & discussed woman question with Laura. I was writing alternative passages for the offensive Belfrage chapter, for Gollancz. Dinner: Eddie, Douglas West, O.K., Maisie, Laura, me. Domecq Fundador Brandy 1874 popular; & Laura started woman-power talk, Eddie challenging, Douglas doubtful, O.K. helpless – till about 12.30 Douglas staying last. Franco definitely being beaten now, in eyes of world.

- Sat. Nov 28th Finished Belfrage rewriting: wrote letter to Bockenshouw (Holland) to protest against the ascription to me of Golden Falcon Jenny to lunch: talk of clothes as index of character. Laura going over translation with Norman. Wrote more of Refugee story. Laura, Karl & I went to 'Rembrandt' at Leicester Square Theatre. The sets were wretched compared with Kermesse Heroique, the subsidiary actors rotten, Laughton acted Laughton, but Elsa Lanchester was very good. A news-interview with one 'Rhodes or Rose' who had been in Spain and deserted the militia, escaping as a British refugee when he saw that Madrid was bound to fall.

- Part of a collection of correspondence between Adrian Stokes and Herbert Read spanning from 1934-1962. Stokes was a painter and art critic who also had an interest in psychoanalysis. It was largely due to his efforts and work that the small fishing port of St. Ives became a centre of modernist art culture. In this letter Stokes discusses Transcendentalism, Read's upcoming book, and Read's health.
