Canadian Military Oral Histories
User Collection PublicThe Canadian Military Oral History Collection is composed of interviews of veterans of WWI, WWII, the Korean War and the War in Afghanistan. Over 370 recordings done by Dr. Reginald H. Roy and his students are the largest holding in this category. Historian Hal Lawrence also donated over 180 recordings that he collected of Canadian Naval personnel.
Collection descriptions
The following are descriptions of the major collections of interviews that make up the collection:
Reg Roy collection
Dr. Reginald H. Roy was the Chair of Military History (1968-1988) and the Social Sciences Research Centre (1970-75) at the University of Victoria. The Reg Roy fonds contains over 370 sound recordings of oral histories conducted over his career and was recognized by Lieutenant-Governor Iona Campagnolo in 2005.
Social Sciences Research Centre collection
This is an important subset of the Reg Roy collection of military oral histories and consists of extensive interviews with Major-General George R. Pearkes and other interviews with his family and a number of personal and professional associates for his biography entitled For Most Conspicuous Bravery: A Biography of Major-General George R. Pearkes, V.C., Through Two World Wars (1977).
Hal Lawrence collection
This collection includes approximately 120 interviews conducted by Commander Hal Lawrence in collaboration with National Defence/Défense nationale on the Canadian Navy (1940-1995). Some of these interviews have been transcribed and some are only available as transcripts.
Shawn Cafferky collection
This collection of 14 interviews by military historian Dr. Shawn Cafferky of the University of Victoria's Department of History were conducted in 1997 and refer to the experimental Squadron VX-10, and the testing and use of the Sikorsky CH-124 Sea King helicopter.
Military oral history class interviews
Since 2005, the History Department has offered a Military Oral History seminar course as a component of the Canadian Veterans Oral History Project, a joint project of the Royal United Services Institute of Vancouver Island (RUSI VI) and University of Victoria. The seminar course offers students the opportunity to interview veterans for course credit and the resulting interviews are deposited with University of Victoria Special Collections.
Elizabeth Hazlitte collection
This collection is comprised of six interviews with veterans of WWI conducted from 1983-84 by Elizabeth Hazlitte, a nurse at Victoria's Veteran's Hospital at the Memorial Pavilion.
David Stafford collection
This collection is comprised of nine interviews conducted by Dr. David Stafford, retired history professor at the University of Victoria, for his monograph on clandestine operations in WWII.

23. Peraya, Jacques: my wartime experiences
- Title Tesim:
- Peraya, Jacques: my wartime experiences
- Description:
- ABSTRACT: Dr. Jacques Peraya Jacques was born in Salonica, Greece, where there was a prominent Sephardi community and a great cultural centre of Ladino art and learning. His father was an engineer who specialized in building ports. The family moved to France when Jacques was young. In 1940 he moved to Palestine. Around this time the Nazis rounded up the Jews of Greece, including many of Jacques' close family, and took them to the gas chambers. Jacques joined the Royal Greek Army Light forces Middle East to fight the Germans. His unit was part of the British 8th Army under Montgomery. After his training near Hadera, Palestine, Jacques was commissioned as a lieutenant and sent to Egypt. His service took him to Cairo, Alexandria, the Western Desert and Sinai. In 1942 he was transferred to the Refugee Relief Administration because he spoke seven languages. His skills were necessary for interviewing refugees. After demobilization Jacques studied at Columbia University in the USA to become an oral maxillo-facial surgeon. He and his family lived in Venezuela where he taught at the University of Venezuela, before moving to Victoria 18 years ago. While stationed in the Sinai, Jacques met King George, who congratulated him on being "the only Jewish officer in that theatre". They shook hands. Jacques fondly recalls the companionship and shared hardships among his colleagues. In the Sinai he swam in the Red Sea near sharks, without realizing the danger. Being single, he had 'many experiences not for sharing'. 'There was no guarantee you will survive so you live as much as you can.' He said the Shema (an affirmation of Judaism and a declaration of faith in one God) every night in hopes of coming out alive. His message to us is he that felt compelled to fight for what is right. He can never forget the loss of his family at the hand of the Nazis., An interview/narrative of Jacques Peraya's experiences during World War II. Dr. Peraya served with the Royal Greek Army Light Forces., Interviewer: Fitch, Edward and Sharon. Date of interview unknown., and Interviewee: Peraya, Jacques

29. Potts, Arthur Edward: my Army recollections (October 15, 1971)
- Title Tesim:
- Potts, Arthur Edward: my Army recollections (October 15, 1971)
- Description:
- ABSTRACT: Maj-Gen A.E. Potts, 15 October 1971. 27pp. Posted to Victoria in 1942. Military preparedness more in order to placate the civilian population than due to real military danger. Comments on training in general. Cancelled the armoured train at Terrace. Critical of Ottawa "Brass". N.M.R.A. problems. McNaughton, Mackenzie King. In his opinion the "Zombies" were badly treated, but were, in fact, only doing what the government told them to do. McNaughton tried very hard to get senior officers to obtain more "active" soldiers - a lost cause. Mentions training in England to 1942, Pearkes, Crerar, and others., Interviewee: Potts, Arthur Edward, b. 1890, Rank: Major-General. Medals and Honours: Order of the British Empire (CBE), Interviewer: Roy, Reginald H., and An interview/narrative of Arthur Edward Potts's recollections of Major-General Pearkes. Major-General Potts was a Canadian General officer, active in World War II. Interview took place on October 15, 1971.
