Lorna Wánosts’a7 Williams
Lorna Wánosts’a7 Williams is Lil̓wat7ul, from Mount Currie, British Columbia. She is an Indigenous educator and language specialist. Being a survivor of federal day schools and residential schools, Wánosts’a7 has experienced the intergenerational impacts that these institutions have had on Indigenous communities and has dedicated her life to promoting and restoring Indigenous culture and language.
After the federal government relinquished control of on-reserve education in 1973, Wanosts’a7 played a key role in developing the curriculum for the band-controlled Ts̓zil Community School in Mount Currie which integrated traditional knowledge, language, and values. She was instrumental in developing the writing system for the Líl̓wat language, including curriculum and learning resources which have seen continued use for decades.
Wanosts’a7 has served as the First Nations Education Specialist for the Vancouver School Board; the Director of the Aboriginal Education Enhancements Branch of the Ministry of Education; and has helped found a number of institutes, including the Variety Learning Centre and the Sa’li’shan Institute. At the University of Victoria, she is Associate Professor Emeritus of Indigenous Education, Curriculum and Instruction; and has served as Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Knowledge and Learning.
Lorna Wánosts’a7 Williams has been appointed to both the Order of British Columbia (1993) and the Order of Canada (2020).

- Description:
- Production material centres around a short interview conducted with Lorna Wanosts’a7 Williams in the ruins of Gamla, located in the Golan Heights region. In tape 1, Wanosts’a7 reflects on the site’s layers of history and compares it to how the layers of history in Mount Currie are represented in their stories. She recalls the oldest story she was taught in her childhood about how people came to live in Mount Currie. In tape 2, Wanosts’a7 continues to speak on the themes of change, a people’s connection to the past, the passage of time, the continuity of life, and the importance of knowing one’s history, as well as the site’s ability to teach reflection on these themes. She then talks about how the site gives one a sense of time, and how she gets a similar feeling from the remnants of old s7ístkens, traditional semi-subterranean winter dwellings of the Lil̓wat7úl, around Mount Currie. The filmed segments of the interview run from 17:18 on tape 1, and continue until 12:16 on tape 2. Additional sequences can be found proceeding and following the interview, including the Old City of Jerusalem, Golan Heights, and the Central Bus Station. 6. Roundtable in Shoresh
- Title:
- Roundtable in Shoresh
- Description:
- Content warning: Tape VR63 contains a brief description of a racist encounter targeting an African American woman in which highly offensive language is used. Production material centres around a roundtable discussion with Lorna Wanosts’a7 Williams, Lettie Battle, Bill Mussell (Skwah First Nation), Sharon Wilson (Nuxalk Nation), Yvette Jackson, Marian Vriend, and Francine Herlihy[?] during Feuerstein’s Summer Institute in Shoresh, Israel. The discussion provides the opportunity for educators and professionals both racialized and working within racialized communities in Vancouver, the United States, France, and Amsterdam to share stories, experiences, and perspectives on the intersection of culture and education. The discussion focuses on Reuven Feuerstein’s characterization of cultural difference and cultural deprivation; how cultural differences are treated in inequitable societies and how this shapes the beliefs individuals have towards their own culture and overall potential; the role of educators in empowering individuals to see their potential to succeed and meet life’s challenges, as well as limitations of that role in helping to meet that goal; and impressions of Feuerstein and how his mission and work has empowered them as educators. The roundtable discussion runs from 15:08 in part 1, and continues until 25:12 in part 7. Following this is a brief section to gather ambient sound from the room, followed by Bill Mussell’s impressions of Feuerstein at 26:40 until the end of part 7 which were missed earlier in the discussion. Additional sequences of Reuven Feuerstein giving demonstrations with some unidentified students as part of the Summer Institute can be found proceeding the discussion.

7. Interview with Lorna Wanosts’a7 Williams at s7ístken site
- Title:
- Interview with Lorna Wanosts’a7 Williams at s7ístken site
- Description:
- Production material centres around two interviews conducted with Lorna Wanosts’a7 Williams near the former site of a S7ístken, a traditional semi-subterranean winter dwelling of the Lil̓wat7úl, along the Birkenhead River. In tape 1, Wanosts’a7 gives a detailed description of a S7ístken and typical layout of a S7ístken village; and how inter-generational stories strengthened her connection to such locations. Tape 1 continues with a second interview in which Wanosts’a7 talks about learning her family’s past; her uncle and his role in the community, including his stories about how smallpox and the 1918 Influenza Epidemic impacted Indigenous communities; and how loss and trauma breakdown community social practices. 10. Queen’s Harbour: First Nations Education, 1860-1970
- Title:
- Queen’s Harbour: First Nations Education, 1860-1970
- Description:
- Production material relates to a short documentary entitled “First Nations Education, 1860-1970” for the Vancouver School Board’s Queen's Harbour Institute project, a multi-day series of workshops and discussions on current issues in education centred around the fictional Queen’s Harbour School Board. The documentary focuses on the history of education and education policy as it has impacted Indigenous peoples in British Columbia. It centres around a presentation given by Lorna Wanosts’a7 Williams in Cowichan Bay as part of the Queen’s Harbour project interspersed with archival photographs and moving image material, as well as material also used in "The Mind of a Child” documentary. Part of the original recording of Wanosts’a7’s presentation is also included. Wanosts’a7 is referred to as Agnes Thomas at various points in the presentation. This is likely related to the format of the Queen's Harbour project for which the documentary was being prepared. The presentation runs from 10:34 on tape VR92, and continues until the end of tape VR94. While the Archives retains the tape intended to have the second part, VR93 [2017-057-004-062], it appears to have been altered prior to being transferred to the Archives and thus no longer contain this segment of the presentation. The content of the missing segment can be found by consulting the transcript. Additional material featuring David Tzuriel talking with Clarissa and Alida Pascal at the Variety Learning Centre proceeds the beginning of the presentation. This material relates more closely with “The Mind of A Child” documentary.
