Robert Graves Diary, 1935-1939
User Collection Public
The collection consists of a complete autograph diary detailing four years in the lives of Robert Graves and Laura Riding. The period covered is from 22nd February 1935 to 6th May 1939, during which time Graves and Riding lived in Mallorca, Lugano, England, Brittany and Pennsylvania. The 1,546 page diary also contains 117 enclosures of letters from Graves' children, photographs, and press cuttings, as well as 99 other miscellaneous items such as typescripts of poems, articles and letters.
This important diary represents a highly detailed record of four years in the lives of both Robert Graves and Laura Riding, from whom he was seldom separated for more than a few hours throughout the period that it covers. As well as giving full accounts of domestic events - building projects, gardening, jam-making, shopping expeditions, visits from friends and the like - Graves notes precisely the work that he and Laura Riding have accomplished each day, both separately and in collaboration. All their working projects are minutely documented.
Please also see the Robert Graves Diary project website.

- Tuesday July 2. To Posada. Only two masons working, two boys, 1 man whitewashing. Also all the water in the well used – aboys bailing it out with from inside. Came back & told Laura. Pepe summoned: rowed by Laura. Promises to get several more men and finish by Saturday. Gelat brings gravel from Can Medo. Undertakes to see that Pepé keeps his promise. Tells of Carindo's secret visit: the médico complains that he has been deserted. Gelat suggests demands to be made which he will grant: e.g. water by day not night for Son Morantes (more convenient to him), offer on behalf of Can Malrich Ca'n Malric to contribute 200 pesetas to making siqui – just so that the Doctor appears to have gained something: the last prize in a competition, says Gelat. Schw. stuff all evening. Wrote to A.G. & to Margaret Russell, with photographs.

- July 7th, Sunday. Bullfight To Posada, Antonio & Paco, Murcianos , laying s clearing cement of stones in patio. Put up mirrors etc. Found a lavatory seat cover. On return went over Tom's novel. Solomon has dysentry. To Palma in new car with Honor, Gordon, Julian, Mary, Joan; Laura, Karl, Juan. Belmonte, Lalanda, Cayetano (Niño de la Palma). Fair haired girl slightly hurt by taxi in Calle Arabi; on the way to Alhambra. Juan pessimistic about bull-fight. We all felt that something would happen to Belmonte. His first bull, black, awkward, knowing. A few passes & Belmonte got tossed. Thought he was killed but not blood, only the red of his coat (covered with lace work except in two patches). Tried to fight but gave up because of the pain. Lalanda finished the bull which was hissed. President's fault for not allowing the picadors to tire the bull. Belmonte himself complaining. Also Belmonte was clearly in bad form pale, perhaps affected by the sea-voyage. Lalanda's second bull bad too; only bright spots: Lalanda's unusually energetic work in second bull, some banderilleroing of Cayetano's and one or two good things in his first bull. Two nice mariposas by Lalanda, and one in rivalry by Cayetano whom we didn't like. Last bull was Cayetano's. He messed it and we came away before the kill. Letter from Korda: Claudius delayed owing to Laughton's illness until Feb. or March. And it was owing to Arnie Lawrence that he didn't continue plan of scenario with me. Wrote to him; all right. But asked him to answer Laura about Fantasia , Troy & No Decency Left . Wrote to H.S. asking him whether I should continue C.F.V. If he cabled, I would. In a moment of bullfight emotion Laura broke her topaz & diamond ring. Didn't notice it until an hour later: solid, too.

- July 10, Wednesday. Up late. To Posada put up corner-cupboard which Gelat bought for us at Casas. Masons putting stones on mina steps. Gave measurements of gates. Honor better. Electric light worked last night. Estacas being fixed. To Fábrica got ice. Gelat says that Son Bujosa is nervous about permission for boat-house owing to espionage legends, and also upset that as a director Soller Succursal of Credito he may be called on to refund money & lose his all. Has offered road for sale to the Deputation at Palma. Will put up boathouse on shore. Has discovered law of Samper's about water which fixes water-rights, where hours are not fixed at 1/2 a litre a second for 10,000 square metres (or something) & the proprietors must fix a regulating tap. This Doctor's protegées will therefore have less than they were voluntarily offered. And Getal Gelat will make the proprietors, by order of Obras Publicas , show their claims. Then put in the water pipes at once – cueste que cueste – even if he has to raise the money from the 'hermitas' ... Concordia walls nearly to ceiling. If he sells road we can do the Valldemosa electricity at once. Gordon went off, alone, in Soller Ferrocarril bus. L. & IDiscussed Children's University with Honor. H. & I would do Poets . Frank Richards sent 2/3 of his book saying if it was not up to mark he would stop. I read a lot of it & found it just the thing. A visit from Gelat. More details of road & water situation. Says now stop work, and only begin again when appeal comes from Ayuntamiento . Has bought Florida stones: will dump them on our carretera . Hot nights.

- July 11th Thursday Work has ceased on the Posada. Reading Richards & writing to him & Morley, Faber & Faber saying that is good. Looked up various Greek things for Laura. To sea. Gordon returned because no boat & I met him down there. Bompiani wanted permission to alter things in Italian version of Claudius : chiefly libels against Livia. Wired, yes. Honor told of Posada's invasion by German tourists. Gelat brought my chair at last. A bit short, but comfortable if one sits at a slight slant. Cherry wood; bull leather, old form. Thought "Old-Soldier, Sahib" a possible title. Paid Fonda for Sabater 150 p[ts]. In evening iced lemonade at Can Torrent & Gordon decided to go by ship because of seasonal train accidents in France. Helped Laura find [out] about mules, red arsenic, Paphogonien leather helmets, box-wood etc. for Troy . Mary typing at [Can] Torrent.
