  • The only remarkable thing seemed to me to be the length of time he has been recirculating about 15 - 20 gal. [gallons] of sea water - 2 months. Sand filters were in use + aeration. The most interesting thing in the faculty is a new Biotron being constructed at a cost of almost $30,000. This has 3 greenhouse units about 8 x 10 each + 2 rooms are 6 x 10, the other about 9 ft [feet] square or 10 ft [feet] square. All are controlled light, temp [temperature] + humidity using a system designed by Minneapolis Honeywell. Each room has individual controls for temp [temperature], wind + humidity. The two enclosed rooms had complicated lighting controls. The smaller had 26 4 ft [feet] incandescent tubes + 12 spot lights on the sealing [ceiling]. The larger room was almost octogonal + had incandescent tubes at 4" [inch] intervals all around the walls + all over the ceiling. In addition there were 50 or 60 incandescent spotlights on the ceiling, all on hinged fixtures. I saw no recording features such as thermohygrographs. In the big room the controls were mounted on a pedestal in the floor. No one had any idea what the research planned for this unit was except that both plant + animal reaction to the variable conditions were to be studied. The range of temp [temperature] was quite narrow. Each room had a control range of only about 10 [degree symbol] C [celsius]. 10 - 20 : 20 - 30 : 30 - 40. We then went to the faculty of Science in a large but incredibly scruffy building, nothing wrong with it that some soap + water, paint + light would have put right. The enrollment in Zoology was 12 undergrads
