  • Black and White 1 Jue, ritual wine vessel bronze, ht. 18.6 cm Shang dynasty, Anyang phase, 14th-11th centuries B.C. ARM Vessel covered with green patina on three slightly splayed legs of tapering triangular section, with typical Anyang phase rounded bottom. Loop handle with bovine head at top over one of legs. Long spout on one side sweeps back to pointed tail-like projection on other side. On rim are two posts or pillars of squarish section with round caps and raised nipples. One post has inscription of clan name. Mid-section with frieze of two taotie masks on ground of fine spirals, vertical flanges separate masks at sides and at nose line of mask opposite handle. Above the masks are designs of rising triangular blades or cicada shapes. 2 Jue, ritual wine vessel bronze, ht. 19.3 cm Shang dynasty, Anyang phase, 14th- 11th centuries B.C. fmn* Vessel covered with green patina on three splayed legs of tapering triangular section, with typical Anyang phase rounded bottom. Loop handle over one of legs, beneath loop is cast inscription of clan name. Long spout on one side sweeps back to pointed tail-like projection on other side. On rim are two posts of squarish section with conical finials rendered with incised swirl designs. The whole is undecorated ex�cept for three circular bands. This jue is said to come from Wangyu. 3 Ge, dagger-axes bronze, I. 24.2 and 23 cm Shang dynasty, 16th-11th centuries B.C. JMH and FMN Two very thin ge dagger-axes with extensive patina. Handle in shape of beaked bird or animal head with two ears or horns projecting from the top edge. A single thread-like line bisects the flat blade. The dagger- axe on left has remnants of coarse cloth in which it was wrapped when buried. 4 Ge, dagger-axe bronze, I. 17 cm Shang dynasty, 16th-11 th centuries B.C. arm Socketed axe with peculiar bend in blade. Raised flat ridge in centre of blade. 5 Ge, dagger-axe bronze, I. 14 cm Shang dynasty, 16th-11th centuries B.C. ARM Socketed axe with most of blade missing. Incised cast inscription on tang reads zi (son). For similar axe see Chinese Bronzes, The Natanael Wessen Collection by Bernhard Karlgren and Jan Wirgin, Stockholm, 1969 No. 42(a). 6 Arrowheads bronze Shang and Zhou periods, 16th-3rd centuries B.C. ARM, FMN and JMH 7 Bone and bronze arrowheads (found at Anyang), I. 8.1 cm and 8.5 cm Shang dynasty, 16th-11th centuries B.C. arm 8 Arrowheads bone Shang dynasty, 16th-11th centuries B.C. fmn and JMH The Shang and Zhou ruling class had ample military force at their command. Archers carrying bows and arrows (and later crossbows) were an important part of their armies. 9 Cowrie shells with one bronze imitation (upper left) Shang dynasty, 16th-11th centuries B.C. fmn During the Shang dynasty, cowrie shells were at first used as an ornament and then as an early form of currency. Bronze replicas of the shells were also made to serve as currency. 10 Button-like ornaments bronze with turquoise inlay, d. 2.2 cm Shang dynasty, 16th-11th centuries B.C. JMH and FMN Two small button-like ornaments with turquoise inlay in the shape of taotie masks. Most of turquoise inlay is now missing. 11 Scrapers or chisels pale green jade, I. 8.1 cm and 7.3 cm Shang dynasty, 16th-11th centuries B.C. arm One chisel with rough rectangular-shape, one perfor�ation at top and blade edge at bottom. Other chisel with irregular shape. 12 Handle pale green jade, I. 8.8 cm Shang dynasty, 16th-11th centuries B.C. fmn Slender, plain, flattened bar in shape of uneven rec�tangular section, shaft with hilt-like top. These pieces often have a small hole in one end to serve as a pendant, but this example has no perforation. 13 Engraver pale green jade, I. 5.3 cm Shang dynasty, 16th-11th centuries B.C. fmn Engraver with conical end and broken rounded shaft. 14 Pendant of dagger-axe green jade, I. 1.5 cm late Shang/Western Zhou period, 14th-8th centuries B.C. JMH Miniature pointed dagger-axe, with two bevelled edges, pierced hole at tang to serve as pendant. 15 Pendant of Owl pale green jade, ht. 3.2 cm Shang dynasty, 16th-11th centuries B.C. fmn Thick, flat plaque carved in the profile of perched owl with a pierced beak. Depictions of owls are common on Shang bronze vessels and there are also vessels in the shape of an owl.
