  • Victoria, B.C. [British Columbia] Nov. [November] 19, 1939. Breeding. This morning for the first time this year the buck in Beacon Hill is showing active interest in the doe. 4 PM. Doe lying in sun after several rainy days. Buck approaches fence, paws the ground with front feet, charges fence in front of me several times. Approaches doe lowering head + neck + raising muzzle as he approaches. Doe acknowledges his approach by looking round + raising her muzzle. As he comes closer she rises + trots away a few paces. Buck stands looking after then makes short rush at her with neck lowered + muzzle raised, she moves off, urinates. Buck approaches doe thus at intervals of 10 to 30 seconds for next half hour. Doe urinates a few drops every 2 or 3 minutes. Fawn appears + buck rushes at it openly hostile, fawn retreats. The buck smelled the does urine frequently + grimaced each time.
