After surrendering to Admiral Ito Sukeyuki, Commander of the Japanese fleet at Weihaiwei, Chinese Admiral Ding Ruchang poisoned him�self. Admiral Ding was the only Chinese leader to put up serious resistance against the Japanese. The Japanese admired his bravery and his dedica�tion in taking his life, so all Japanese vessels low�ered their flags to half-mast as the ship with his body left the harbour.
