Foreword
The Chinese and Japanese art collections of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria are > amongst the finest in Canada. Thanks to a variety of donors but principally Mrs. Isabel Pollard and Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Finalyson, as well as private collectors, we have paintings and objets dart, which suggest the variety and genius of the Chinese and Japanese literati style. [
This exhibition differs from others on the subject in that it presents both paintings ?
done by literati and the items they collected in both China and Japan. It offers similarities *
as well as contrasts in the two cultures. Curator of Asian Art, Barry Till, and York ?
University Professor, Dr. Jordan Paper, have selected the works and written this catalogue *
providing an interesting look at the literati concept. t
We are grateful to several organizations for the success of the Refined Tastes: The >
Literati Style of China and Japan. We would like to thank the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Museum Assistance Program for the financial support of this travelling exhibition. The Art Gallery of Greater Victorias Volunteer Committee, the British Columbia Arts Council and the Capital Regional Districts through the f municipalities of Saanich, Victoria, Oak Bay, and Esquimalt, have all contributed >
financial support, which has enabled the AGGV to undertake this special project. r
