Banff, Alta. [Alberta] (Saskatchewan R. [river] at mile (100) June 8/43 [1943]
Food:- 7 fecal deposits contained
nothing but equisetum :- Specimens
of this plant preserved.
Behavior:- While I was examining the
cow moose a black bear came
quietly up wind and crowded me
off the carcase [carcass]. I had to
discourage the brute with a .22
long rifle in the haunch.

Food [underlined]:- Found two deposits both 100% equisetum.
Disease:- Found a 2 year old male
black bear lying dead in a little clearing
in the spruce woods about a mile
from camp. Dead about 2-3 days.
Subcutaneous vessels congested. Lungs
Hepaticized in areas other parts with mottled
dark red + gray appearance. Heart enlarged,
+ very flabby. Liver very soft +
showing many stellate or irregularly
shaped areas of whitish, then about 3 mm [millimeters]
in diameter. Upon section these were found
to be gas bubbles + the entire liver was
charged with gas. Intestine with acute
inflammation. No discharge from
any body openings
