- Garry [Cowan] was delighted when [Arthur] Duncan put out
his moth trap. The proceeds were a joy to
his heart.
Aug [August] 18. Edinburgh.
Back home + to the joys of a hot bath.
Garry [Cowan] has the beginnings of a cold worse luck.
We came home laden with eggs + honey. We
now have six dozen eggs in hand.
Aug [August] 19 Edinburgh at University.
I was interested to go over Dr Steven's vole colony
with him. He has best luck breeding them
out on the roof. There he has a series of
frames glass roofed but open all round +
raised slightly from the bottom. In each
he places a breeding cages of wooden frame
about 18 X 12 X 8. Inside the wood frame it
nailed fine punched metal sheet. Dry grass [words crossed out] The top of
each cage is hinged. No water is provided.
They are fed 2 to 3 times a week with
cull turnip, a mixture of wheat + oats + fresh
grass. They need cleaning not more than
once in 3 months.
He has a good field carrying box of
wood, lined with removeable [removable] sheets of the
same metal. hinged lid, 3 compartments by
means of removeable [removable] metal partitions. An
improvement would be 3 separate metal
cages in the wooden box. Suitcase handle
Marginalia: Smart Sayings by Jack [McWilliams]. The display leks of some grouse are not matrimonial
bureaus but revival meetings.
The P in ptarmigan is silent - as in swimming [note inserted later]
