19. University Salaries Saw adds [ads] for an Asst [Assistant] Lecturer in Engineering at U. [University] of Liverpool at L [pounds] 450, + a lecturer L [pounds] 55-650 A govt [government] job for an honours grad [graduate] in mycology at L [pounds] 410. Aug [August] 2. Edinburgh. Returned from St [Saint] Cyrus today. Edinb [Edinburgh] Aug [August] 3. This afternoon it stopped showering + I took advantage of the lull + walked over to the botanical gardens. The rock gardens + the rhododendron collections are particularly impressive and I made note of a lot of very worthwhile plants I have listed in the back. Ed [Edinburgh] Aug [August] 4-5. Hard at work at the University. Ed [Edinburgh] Aug [August] 6. With [Major I.B.C.] Neilson drove to Granton + took the ferry over to Burntisland whence we drove to Dunfermline stopping en route for a picnic lunch among the heather. We had a most enjoyable afternoons skating + arrived home about 5 o'clock. Ed. [Edinburgh] Aug [August] 7. At University all day. Nothing eventful In the evening phoned Daniel + Alice [Mackenzie] + made arrangements to visit the latter on Tuesday. Aug. [August] 12 Took bus to Tynron starting from Castle Terrace at 1:10 this afternoon. We had a really good view of the Pentland hills in all their glory of heather but before we got to Dalveen Pass the clouds dropped + a heavy rainstorm. We
