  • Dec [December] 5 [1957] Hong Kong This morning we were met by Dr + Mrs David Davies [or Davis?], head of Geology Dept [Department] U. [University] of Hong Kong. They took us on a most interesting drive through the new territories to the Chinese Border + back round the far side of the peninsula. Saw much of the terrace culture of rice + garden crops. They get 2 crops of rice + after a vegetable crop off the same ground. Both human and chemical fertilizers used. Pearl oyster culture is beginning on the Japanese pattern. Dec [December] 6 [1957] Hong Kong Up bright + early + off across the bay to be met by Dr David Barker, Head of the Dept [Department] of Biology at U [University] of H.K. [Hong Kong] This is a thriving institution of about 1500 students mostly Chinese. All live in + the University has some very fine residences beautifully situated. The Biol. [Biology] Bldg [Building] was completed just months before the Japanese invasion + was stripped by looters, as a result the fittings + equipment are all new. There are 6 zoologists including Owamey [?] in fisheries ie 2 in fisheries + 3 in general zool [zoology] + biol [biology]. The botanists operate within the dept [department] but are on their way to autonomy. Barker is working on the prioceptive [proprioceptive] end organs. One of the others is working on the biology of the local oysters + the introduced oysters largely with respect to growth rate. I lectured to about 40 students on the general subject of arctic adaptation in mammals. We lunched together + then Joyce + I went back to Kowloon to rejoin the others for dinner at Aberdeen floating restaurant. Parrot fish, red snapper + common snapper were the fish available along with prawns, oysters + conch.
