Spray Lakes. June 12/43 [1943]
Had to hunt our horses this morning
+ consequently did not leave 15 mile
cabin until 11:30. Rode steadily +
made camp here at 4:30
Trail passes up through a burn
for about 2-3 miles then through
spruce + pine timber the rest
of the way. Lots of elk sign
in the burn. Saw several
bulls. Elk had travelled the
trail through the timber but
it was primarily moose
habitat
Pellet count moose 27, elk 9 deer 1
Coyote sign abundant in burn +
at Spray Lakes but none in timber
Some elk have wintered in
this region but no sign of
overbrowsing.

Bryant Creek. June 13/43. [1943]
Today travelled about 17 miles. Left
camp at 11:40 after hunting horses for 3
hours. Wrangler is useless. Rode up
the Spray to the fork of the trail
leading up to Whiteman Pass
