- Balaenoptera acutorostrata [underlined]
May 21, 1939. off Discovery Island.
Today saw a full grown
individual of what I took
to be this whale feeding
along the edge of a large
tide rip. The fairly large
dorsal fin placed well
aft seemed to be characteristic
It rose to blow about
10 times at distances of from
200 to 500 yards from
us. Each blow consisted
of two separate sounds; a
metallic poo! [underlined] followed by
a short sound like, hup! [underlined]
inhaled The first about twice
the duration of the latter and
the whole lasting perhaps a
second and a half.
The whale would respire
3 times at intervals of
about 30 seconds, then
sound for 4 to 5 minutes.
At no time did the flukes
show.
